Owls Head

Winter overnight in the whites

A lower elevation peak of the 48 4000 footers, rated #43 overall.

We took the standard route beginning at the Lincoln woods trailhead. Our three-man crew hiked 3 or 4 miles in on mostly flat terrain and set up camp. In the morning we hiked the 7 miles through a blustery day for an unexposed peak.

MSR snowshoes

This trip taught me to wear proper boots on winter hikes. These bulky sorel boots had a huge “toebox” leading my big toes to continually push against the roof of the boot. It ended up blackening both toe nails, a 6 month lesson you don’t forget.
